PROJECTS & PROGRAMS

The HUSIKA Project

OVERVIEW

In 2009, T-MARC partnered with Population Services International to support a five-year, USAID-supported HIV Prevention project targeting most-at-risk populations. The Husika (Get Involved) was designed to reduce the HIV incidence in Tanzania among mostat-risk populations and their sexual partners by strengthening protective behaviours of most-at-risk populations (MARPS) and their sexual partners and by strengthening the environment at national, regional, and district levels to improve MARP access to high quality medical and nonmedical support and services.

Under this partnership, T-MARC reactivated, strengthened, and scaled up several of the innovative pilot initiatives developed under the T-MARC project, such as the hair salon initiative (Jipende! Centres for Women’s Health) and sex worker outreach (Jipende Grants Program). The primary target audience included sex workers, clients of sex workers (SW), women engaged in transactional sex (WETs) and their clients. The secondary target audience were substance abusers and vulnerable children of MARPS.

Project Highlights

  • Trained sex worker peer educators on basic facts and questions on HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention, treatment and care; basic facts on STI symptoms, prevention and treatment; male and female condom demonstrations; interpersonal communication skills; family planning; condom use negotiation skills; and HIV/AIDS service referral contacts.
  • Conducted outreach and interpersonal communication sessions on HIV prevention.
WETS on HIV/AIDS basic information, safer sex and how to use female condom consistently and correctly. They were also encouraged to access voluntary HIV testing and counselling (HTC) services to know their HIV status.
